Brig. Gen. Cirilito E. Sobejana, commander of the Armed Forces of the Philippines Joint Task Force Sulu said at least 299 ABU SAYYAF terrorists were grounded including: 97 were killed out of which 14 leaders, 57 wounded, 79 were captured and 66 surrendered during the period from Feb. 21, 2017 to Feb. 28, 2018. But there are still 488 to be accounted with.
In 39 gun battles, there were nine soldiers killed and 109 were wounded in various parts of Sulu. Soldiers also seized 251 different calibers.
The Abu Sayyaf, with links to the Islamic terrorists in the Middle East, is engaged in terror activities, including kidnapping for ransom, for over two decades. Recently from Feb. 21, 2017 to Feb. 27, 2018, they had kidnapped 45 people.
