Presidential Chief Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo warned the manufacturers and distributors of counterfeit medicine will be facing charges of economic sabotage. The administration is planning to file the charges against persons behind the proliferation of fake medicine as it threats health and economy.
President Rodrigo Duterte directed the authorities to arrest and prosecute individuals behind the counterfeit medicine. Panelo explained further that the distribution will affect the supply and demand since it is more cheaper than the legitimate brands. Hereto, breaching the fair competition and branding in the market.
The crackdown will suit to PD 1404 specifically Economic Sabotage relating "well as other laws the importation, sale, trade, administration, dispensation, delivery, distribution and transportation of fake or adulterated drugs do not only undermine or weaken the national economy by hitting a large scale industry, they also threaten national security by endangering the health of a vast majority of the people hence the said acts constitute economic sabotage,” Panelo added.
