LUMAD FORCED TO LEAVE THEIR HOUSES AFTER MILITARY ABUSED THEM

Surigao del Sur, Philippines - Individuals from a Lumad communities were reported to force evacuate on July 16, 2018, due to the alleged military abuses of the 75th IBPA. At least 1, 607 indigenous people from rural villages both from Lianga and San Agustin towns fled from their homes on Monday.

The soldiers have been in the community for about a month of their military encampment. However, it is allegedly reported that they committed human rights abuses that include sexual harassment against children and women, threat, intimidation of TRIFPSS, and forced CAFGU recruitment.

Aside from that, Lumad leaders were threatened with criminal charges by the military if they will evacuate, and residents have only had a little access to food. Farmers are not allowed to go to their farms due to the presence of the soldiers.

Lumad evacuees trek for almost 10 hours. Among the evacuees are the 48 volunteer teachers, and 568 learners of the alternative schools TRIFPSS and ALCADEV INC. Despite several checkpoints from the military, they (evacuees) traveled to seek temporary shelter. According to the source, this has been the 4th attempt of a forced evacuation of the Manobo communities.
