The five month long battle in Islamic City of Marawi started on May 23, 2017 brought larger picture of modern day extremism and terrorism in the Philippines. The siege between between Philipppine Forces and extremists Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), including the Maute and Abu Sayaff Salafi Jihadist groups marks as the longest urban battle in the modern history of the Philippines.

Duterte to extend the Martial Law Declaration in Mindanao until December 31, 2018, 240 were in favor while 27 were against it, 14-4 and 226-23, Senate and House of Representatives respectively. Senators Aquino, Drilon, Hontiveros and Pangilinan are against it.
“Public safety is our primordial concern; thus, we ask the public to stand behind the Administration and rally behind our defenders to quell the continuing rebellion in Mindanao,” Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said.
