Following
the directive of President Rodrigo Duterte, Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre
III ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to investigate the
missing high-powered firearms of the Philippine National Police (PNP) which
ended up in the hands of communist rebels in Mindanao.
Aguirre
issued the Department Order 7 directing the NBI to file necessary cases against
officials and private individual who will be liable for these missing firearms.
In
a statement, Aguirre said: “With this, we are confident that those
individuals who are responsible for this felonious act will be held
accountable.”

Aguirre pushed through the order despite the pending graft case against several current and former high-ranking police officials and individuals allegedly connected to the missing firearms.
It
could be recalled that in June 2014, under the administration of former
President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, the PNP Criminal Investigation and
Detection Group (CIDG) revealed that in August 2011 to April 2013, over 1,004
firearms worth P52 million were sold to the New People’s Army.

In an encounter with NPA rebels in Caraga region and Western Mindanao, the Philippine Army’s 401st Infantry Brigade have recovered 44 of the missing AK-47 rifles, five of which were among the 1,0004 missing firearms.

The
Ombudsman’s investigation led to the filing of graft cases against 15
individuals including former and active police officers.
