Top Rome archaeology official Francesco Prosperetti and the team unearthed a domus during the subway construction, its's adjacent to a previously excavated ancient Roman military barracks. The expansion of subway excavated additional remnants of the history sprawling 2nd century residence of military commander, complete with mosaic, marble floors, frescoed walls and bones.
He says the subway work has turned into an “astounding archaeological construction site.” The domus, found 12 meters (40 feet) below the surface, includes at least 14 rooms and a fountain in a central courtyard. The ruins will be moved elsewhere so tunneling can continue.
Rome’s Metro C line new stops running in years and setbacks behind schedule due to excavation. Bureaucracy and construction scandals have also caused long delays.
