Militant group ISIS claimed the 11 casualties and others wounded in the suicide bombing at the military checkpoint in Basilan.
The van exploded killing five members of the Philippine Army's Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (CAFGU), and four civilians—including a woman and her child—were killed and seven people were wounded in the blast.
Vehicle bombings are extremely rare in the Philippines, despite decades of conflicts and Islamic violence.
