President Rodrigo Duterte announced on Thursday that he has appointed a new Supreme Court Associate Justice. It was Judge Samuel Martires.
“We have a new ombudsman. I signed the appointment of Justice Martires. He is bright and he is a fair man,” Duterte said.
Martires was appointed as the 7th Ombudsman by President Rodrigo Duterte, replacing then-outgoing Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales. After completing the seven-year terms as the head of the anti-graft body, Ombudsman Morales will soon to end her stint.
Prior to Martires appointment, he had served as Associate Justice of Sandiganbayan from 2005 to 2017. On May 11, 2018, Samuel Martires was one of the eight justices who voted in favor of the quo warranto petition filed by Solicitor General Jose Calida against then-Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno
