President Rodrigo
Duterte nominated the late Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago for conferment of
the Quezon Service Cross, the highest civilian award in the Philippines,
Senator Sonny Angara said on Tuesday.
Angara and Grace Poe
were the authors of the Senate resolution urging President Duterte to bestow
the Quezon Service Cross on Santiago.
Angara, author of a
Senate resolution seeking to bestow the Quezon Service Cross on the late
senator, said the Senate has received Duterte's formal nomination.
“The late Senator
Miriam deserves no less than the President’s official endorsement for the
nation’s recognition of her exemplary contribution as a public servant,” Angara
said.
Mr. Duterte also sent a
letter to Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III for the approval of
Santiago’s conferment of the award, according to Angara.
The lawmaker citing
Duterte’s admiration for Santiago who used her talent and intelligence to serve
and inspired the Filipino people to strive for excellence.
The Quezon Service
Cross was created in 1946 to award a person for exemplary service to the
country of the late President Manuel L. Quezon.
