Nothing can stop the government from implementing the Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) modernization program.
According
to the Department of Transportation (DOTr), at least 500 new jeepneys will
start plying the streets of Metro Manila and several provinces by late April.
“We
want to show the public that these new jeeps are coming and we can then compare
why we want the modern jeepneys,” said Tim Orbos, DOTr undersecretary for
roads.
The bulk of the jeepneys will run in Manila while some will
cater the areas of Mindoro, Nueva Ecija, Iloilo and Tacloban.
Orbos
explained that no standard look was required for the new jeepneys but all
complied with the guidelines and specifications required by the DOTr under the
modernization program including having at least Euro 4-compliant engine, a
22-seating capacity and a side door.
The
modernization program has drawn huge flak from jeepney operators and militant
groups calling the project “anti-poor.”
The
DOTr, on the other hand, insisted that the program would benefit commuters
having new jeepneys that are not just safe and comfortable but also health and
environment-friendly.
