DENR targets Baguio next tourism destination to be rehabilitated







The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said on Sunday, December 9, that the ‘Summer Capital’ will be the next ecotourism zone the government will rehabilitate, sites geo-hazard and traffic concerns in the area as reasons.

According to Environment Undersecretary Benny Antiporda, government efforts will be focused on the rehabilitation of Baguio after Boracay, Palawan, and Bohol.




According to Antiporda, 70 percont of the city are geo-hazard that need immediate action that will never happened during the Hyatt (Hotel) tragedy, said in an interview on GMA – DZBB Super Radyo.

The tragedy referred to the Baguio earthquake, which happened in 1990, at 4:40 in the afternoon, a 7.7 magnitude, shakes the city for a minute, destroying properties and most of the population leaving homeless, resulting in an estimated US $369 million worth of damages, and 2,412 casualties.




Antiporda also added that parts of Baguio had saturated soil and rocks are fractured, expecting worse case scenarios than the 1990 earthquake.

The DENR Undersecretary said the government also look into traffic concerns in the city that congests easily as tourists gradually visits during holidays and peak seasons, plans for road extension projects and e-transport to lessen air pollution.

He added that the rehabilitation of the Boracay Island is still on-track, with the road networks expects to be complete before the end of the year.
