Malacañang fires back at Senator Antonio Trillanes IV yesterday, December 9, after criticizing the double-standard justice claim under Duterte’s administration, moments after the Davao City Regional Court issued an arrest warrant for libel.
Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said, "instead of facing this squarely, however, the Senator from Bicol ranted and released a fiery statement before the media, attacking the administration as his usual style. Senator Trillanes is certainly out of his wits."
This was happened after Former Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte had filed libel complaints against Trillanes over senator's claims that the son of the President is linked to smuggling of billions of pesos worth of shabu and to extortion from ride-sharing firm Uber and other firms.
Under Article VI, Section 11 of the Constitution, as a member of Congress, he is privileged from being arrested in cases punishable by less than six years imprisonment while Congress is in session.
In response, Trillanes said that he was planning to coordinate with National Capital Region Police Office chief Director Guillermo Eleazar once the warrant is available, “so that I could turn myself in voluntarily.”
“So, instead of turning myself in, which is apparently not possible under the circumstances, I will just post bail before the appropriate court on Monday,” he said.
Trillanes also says that he will face charges against him, ranted back at President Rodrigo Duterte in managing the justice system in his government, saying, “He let the bandits free and the critics, they make a case to them so that they will be forced to be jailed.”
Panelo, replied that Trillanes' statement only shows who he really is —an "incorrigible rabble-rouser" and a "perennial whiner."
"[He is] a false accuser who, when hailed to court, cries like a baby reminiscent of staging a coup and surrenders instantly even without a gun being fired from the government forces," Panelo added.
Panelo also pointed out that being a senator (Trillanes) can not excuse him from prosecution.
The Davao City Regional Trial Court Branch 54 Judge Melinda Alconcel-Dayanghirang set the bail for Trillanes' temporary liberty at P24,000, which the senator said he would face process on Monday, December 10.
The Department of Justice has requested other courts where Trillanes faces pending cases to bar the staunch administration critic from travelling overseas.
